About
Tun Sakaran

Tun Dr. Sakaran Dandai’s life story is deeply intertwined with the history and spirit of Semporna. Born in 1930 in this coastal town, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of Sabah’s most respected leaders—serving as the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) of Sabah and its 8th Chief Minister. But beyond political titles, Tun Sakaran was a man of the people, deeply invested in the progress, education, and cultural identity of his hometown and the wider Sabah community.
The Tun Sakaran Museum stands as a living tribute to his legacy. Built on land he personally donated, the museum reflects his lifelong dedication to public service and his belief in preserving history and heritage. Inside, visitors can trace his personal journey through an impressive collection of photographs, official memorabilia, and personal items that bring to life the remarkable path he carved—from grassroots leadership to state governance.
What sets Tun Sakaran apart is his enduring connection to the people of Semporna, especially the Bajau community to which he belonged. He understood the importance of safeguarding cultural identity while fostering unity in a multiethnic state. As such, the museum not only tells his story but also elevates the voices, traditions, and artistry of the local community he championed throughout his life.
Through his work, Tun Sakaran advocated for education, infrastructure, and economic empowerment, always striving to uplift rural and coastal communities. He remained accessible and grounded, a leader whose humility and wisdom earned the respect of many across Malaysia. Even after his passing in 2021, his influence continues to be felt in the initiatives he supported and the people whose lives he touched.
Visiting the Tun Sakaran Museum is not just a historical journey—it is an invitation to reflect on the values of service, cultural pride, and community strength. It is a place where Tun Sakaran’s legacy is not just remembered, but actively passed on to inspire future generations to lead with integrity, vision, and heart.
